A Scar You Have and It's Story - Day 16

I’m sure my family can guess what story I plan to tell for this topic.  While I’ve had my fair share of “accidents” and stories and scars, there’s one that stands out above them all.
It was the beginning of second grade, the first day of art class to be exact.  I had finished breakfast and like any good kid, I went up to the bathroom to brush my teeth before leaving the house.  After I was done brushing, I opened the medicine cabinet, put the toothbrush away, and BOOM! ...the cabinet door came crashing down.  It all happened so quick.
Next thing I knew, my mom was knocking on the door to the bathroom asking me to open it.  I did and while I had made no sound, she heard the cabinet door go crashing to the floor, and as the door opened there I was standing there with blood dripping down my face.  The cabinet door hit my forehead, making a small slice above my right eye.
She called work that she would be late, call school that I wouldn’t be there, made sure my grandma could watch me and we were off to the doctor.  I got 5 stitches and spent the day watching cartoons.  And what was I the most upset about? It wasn’t the stitches.  It wasn’t the fact that a door came crashing on my head.  It was that I missed the first day of art class.
While I do my best to cover up the scar on my forehead, if you look closely, you can see the tiny little bump that remains.
While I have scars on my knee from two surgeries, a scar on my right hand middle finger knuckle from working on my birthday a couple years ago, the stories that go along with those just don’t seem nearly as interesting.  Unless you want to hear about me being slid through an emergency exit window on an Amtrak train in Boston one summer, but that will have to wait for another day.

Something You Can't Leave Home Without - Day 15

You mean aside from the obvious - wallet with drivers license and hopefully a form of payment (credit cards, cash, whatever you prefer to use)?  Easy...my iPhone!!
I know, I know.  My sister is probably cringing in front of her computer screen reading this right now.  Not because I can’t leave my house without a phone, because I can’t leave without my iPhone!
What can I say?  It’s more than just a phone to me, it’s my job.  I bought a MacBook Air because I wanted the portability of having my computer on me a lot and where I could respond to emails to promoters, bookers, whoever on a normal keyboard.  But let’s remember having a computer on you all the time would just be crazy and isn’t ideal, even with a computer that’s only 11” and a couple pounds.  I’m not going to carry my Air with me to a show or to a bar with friends or while I’m out shopping, unless I happened to be somewhere else that I needed it and those were stops after (and you can bet I’m not leaving it in the car to “wait” for my return).  But sometimes there are quick emails you can respond to while waiting to meet a friend for coffee or while waiting in the stupidly long check-out line at the grocery store or while you wait for your friend to finish trying on the 10 pairs of jeans she brought with her into the dressing room.  It’s convenient and has helped my career SO much.
Maybe it’s time for a story....
A couple years ago when I was still living in New Jersey, a couple of friends came to visit me and we decided to spend the day being tourists in NYC and seeing the Statue of Liberty.  Later that evening one of the bands I was working with, Copesetic, had a show at a new venue we’d never worked with before.  It was a recommendation from a coworker at Starbucks who knew the booker, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean anything and things went anything but smooth.  It was up in the air whether we were going to make the show that night (we meaning me, Tracey and Laura).  As we were about to hop onto the ferry from NYC to NJ, I got a call from the band.  It was difficult to hear on the boat and I kept going in and out of signal and losing the call, but as soon as we hit land I called them back.  The venue had NO idea why they were there....their name was on the schedule but crossed out.  Another band’s name was written and crossed out.  As far as they knew, no one was playing tonight.  But since nothing appeared to be scheduled, the show would go on.
The drama didn’t end there.  Tracey, Laura and I were able to make it to the venue within minutes of the first band getting ready to play.  I had booked the whole night, pulling in another band from the area to open, set up  a fee for each band to be played and amount of time.  When I showed up, I was informed the venue was still unable to get in contact with their booker, they had no idea what the plan for the evening was.  Eventually the booker showed his face, pulled me aside while the first band was playing and we got into a brief battle of “I said, you said” (imagine “he said, she said” but between you and me).  Things left unresolved and with a “I need to discuss this nonsense with the band.”  I was fuming.  I gave the band a brief rundown as they were concerned by the smoke coming out of my ears, but they needed to play.  Meanwhile, I was trying to pull up the email on my phone, a Blackberry Pearl.  No luck.  Stupid %$%^&&*(^
The band finishes playing, they’re packing up, the crowd stayed and enjoyed the music and additional drinks, everyone the band brought ate food and drank beer, the bar clearly did much better than they would have on said night.  The booker hid from the bar the whole time the bands were playing.  But he had to show his face, he had to pay the band and by this point they were filled in on all the details.  AND...Jay, the drummer and Apple employee, pulled out his iPhone, helped me log into my email and we found the email that contained the “he said, she said” aka WHAT I SAID!  When we went to talk to him again, he tried to stiff the bands the money we agreed on, I took Jay’s iPhone and shoved it in his face and said “this is what we agreed to! You can’t deny that! And if this is not what you meant, too bad because I used CLEAR terms and you said ‘Agreed’!”
...we got paid.
...and I was right. :)
And when my Blackberry let me down because it’s stupid deleting of messages, Jay’s iPhone saved the day.  It was that night that I knew I needed that phone.  It was that story that I told a few different times in my interviews for Apple.  It was that night that made me realize that phone was needed in my career.  I needed a device that wouldn’t let me down.  So I switched to AT&T, started paying my own phone bill and have never looked back.
And while I’m on the subject, no, I will not be switching back to Verizon now that they are releasing the iPhone to that carrier.  Who wants to be on a CDMA network and not have the ability to check their email and browse the web while also on a phone call?  Not me.  If I’m going to pay so much money for such a high tech phone that I have determined being such an integral part of my career, why wouldn’t I want to get the most of it?  But I want my phone to be able to do everything that it possibly can (not having the iPhone 4 already eats away at me some days).
Bethany, I’m sorry if you’re feeling sad for my need for this phone.  But don’t look at it so much as a need for technology (though that is a part), consider it something I need for my job, for the company that I’m starting up, and for the overall success of the bands that I manage.  Remember, that makes me cool?

TV Show Currently Addicted To - Day 14

Can I just start out by saying that I love when people tell me I inspire them to go to the gym? Because I love it.  Exercise and nutrition are very important aspects of my life and to have people tell me that I help inspire them to make it an important part of their lives is just an amazing feeling.  Today a coworker of mine said that my simple “check-in” at the gym yesterday with a comment of how I never regret a workout, even when I wasn’t originally in the mood to go - made him want to go the gym.  I love that. :)
I’m gearing up for a crazy week at work - Verizon iPhone launch!  One of the other admins is out of town right now and since we will all need to be there through the whole weekend, our days off had to come early in the week and be staggered.  I worked a bit of overtime today because we need to be on top of our game and I want to make sure all of the “leftovers” aren’t being left for my coworker on my day off or on the day I’m working overnight for set-up and won’t have much time to be of help in the office.  I’m carefully planning out my week and time for workouts, as we know how much I need those to keep my sanity.
Now to get back on today’s topic: TV show currently addicted to
As I sit here typing this out, I’m watching episodes of one of the shows I’m currently addicted to, American Dad.  Yes, I know, cheap, dumb comedy yet there’s something about it that has me coming back for more.  I think because as I watch it, it allows me to not think or care about anything but rather laugh at stupid jokes - totally fits the “mindless TV” category out there but I don’t mind.
But really the show I’m obsessed with is Dexter.  I mean how could you not be?  One of my ex-boyfriends introduced me to the show when we first started dating.  I wasn’t sure at first how I felt about it because it really didn’t seem like my kind of show, not to mention the strange plot where the killer is the hero.  Yet I quickly learned that I couldn’t tear myself away and as we finished season after season, I knew the day when I “caught up” was coming.  Since I don’t have cable, I have to either wait for the shows to become available online, download them or find a friend who is planning on watching and invite myself over to join.  Watching the show with people is always fun, so that’s not a big deal but since their seasons are relatively short (12 episodes), I’m constantly wanting MORE and the wait between seasons feels like an eternity.  I’m currently waiting for season 6...tick tock, tick tock!  Dad, I really think you should give it another chance.  Start with season 1, episode 1 and watch a few episodes.  I would guess less than half-way through the season, you’ll be addicted too.
And let’s not forget Lost.  I didn’t watch an episode while it was on air and heard nothing about it or how it ended (phew!).  But a few weeks after the series finale, I started watching it.  Really just because I wanted to see what all the hype was about....it was GOOD!  I had a few days that I was sick and knocked out a season in 2 days (a couple different times)...heh.  I’m pretty sure by rushing through it, I missed some key information and didn’t enjoy it to the fullest extent but I plan on going back at some point and watching it again, just slowly.  It was good and I want to pick up on the little things I may have missed.

Your Favorite Musician and Why? - Day 13

This is not a black and white question.  It’s not as easy as the question lays itself out there to be.  Anytime someone asks me this question, I often go into a world-wind not knowing what to say.  How is that even possible?  A girl who has devoted her life to music and she doesn’t even know who her favorite musician is? Fail. Total and complete fail.
I could go on about why I think I am this way, but honestly it probably wouldn’t make much sense or would get really boring - aka it doesn’t matter.  What I can tell you are the musicians who are being played most in my life right now.  Yes, I am changing the question.  This is my blog, I can do that!
So without further ado, here is my list of the music going to my ears lately:
-Mumford & Sons
-Cold War Kids
-Florence and the Machine
-Arcade Fire
-The Lumineers (duh!)
-Neon Trees
-Thriving Ivory
-Augustana
-Temper Trap
There’s also a ton of other stuff that hits my ears everyday, both new and old, but these are the things that have been going on repeat while I’m at the gym or just chilling out at home.
What have YOU been listening to?

A Photo of the Town You Live In - Day 12

It’s a good thing the “town” that I live in is an extremely photogenic town with all the gorgeous sunrises, sunsets and pretty consistent sunshine.  It actually makes picking ONE photo difficult, so instead you’re getting multiple.  I live on the “west side” in LA and work in Santa Monica so these are pictures from all over those areas.  They may also have some “help” from iPhone camera apps to make them more artsy but the picture was taken in the first place because there was a view that took my breath away.  I hope you enjoy them...

In other news, I’m on a bit of an organizational mindset right now.  The unfortunate thing is that I don’t have time to get things organized or money to put into additional organizational boxes and stuff.  And as I mentioned the other day, I don’t particularly feel like investing money into getting myself as organized as I would like in my current space just to know I will be moving in the (very) near future and will have to figure out how to get myself organized in that space when the time comes.  Despite that, I did buy two new storage boxes today at Target.  They’re the cloth “baskets” so there are no lids but they’ll be perfect for my rather large supply of purses and bags to store in the shelf in my closet. :)  I’m excited.  I like when things are organized and everything has a place.  But I’m not a big fan of “clear” containers.  I understand their purpose of being able to actually SEE what’s in them, I don’t want to SEE the clutter!  There are some things that I think clear boxes are perfect and the way to go, but for other things, I think a box that you can’t see through is a better option as long as you’re finding a way to mark what’s in there and not letting the clutter in that box get out of control.  I was talking to one of my coworkers about this the other day as we’re in the process of re-organizing the office at work.  I don’t want to see the clutter in the manager’s boxes (ie-their shirts, papers, lanyards, food, etc).  They each have their own and in my opinion, I don’t need (or want) to see it.  It all comes down to each person’s preference though...
Boy I can’t wait to move though.  I love how when you move it’s an opportunity to go through all of your stuff and get rid of the things you don’t need and re-organize the stuff you’ve been dying to get to but didn’t have time - now, you’re forced to!  I also hope to find a building I feel “safer” in.  Don’t get me wrong (and Mom & Dad don’t freak out), I’m in a fairly safe area and fairly safe building but there are aspects of this building that don’t allow me to feel as safe as I would like.  I’ve also been getting some very strange and disturbing nightmares that are making me feel on edge, despite the fact that deep down inside, I know I’m safe and these are only nightmares.  I’m not going to go into what the nightmares are because I don’t want to freak anyone out or have anyone go “wow girl, you’re messed up!” just know that I’m taking the steps necessary to feel safer and more secure, and looking for a new apartment as soon as I can.
As I mentioned in my previous post about the busy-ness that has been the last couple of days, one thing that I did today was get my hair cut for the first time in about 9 months!  The last time I had it cut was May of last year...it was beyond time to go back!  I decided I also wanted to color my hair again, going with the semi-permanent so the color would fade away and require less up-keep.  I hoped to get the same girl I got last time but she moved away, but the guy I got was awesome.  Unfortunately, they didn’t correctly save my color from last time but I’m still very happy with what I got today, as well as the cut.  Floyd’s Barbershop = awesome!

What's In Your Makeup Bag - Day 11

I’m late, I’m sorry!!  Yesterday was one of those days that I just felt like was busier than it was actually meant to be.  I was at work the night before until midnight for a meeting and then needed to be back at 8 the next morning.  While my computer came with, waking up 40 mins before needing to be at work yesterday meant I forgot my pre-packed lunch in the fridge and instead of being able to spend my lunch getting things done (ie-blogging), I was trying to hunt down something I felt like eating for lunch, which by the way was extremely unsuccessful and ended up consisting of some yogurt and 2 chocolate chip cookies....real healthy, Katie. :(
After work I sat in traffic, went to the gym, ate dinner and then a friend came over to get ready to go out for another friend’s birthday.  We got home a little after midnight and I went straight to bed because I was exhausted.  I woke up this morning, met a friend at the gym, rushed home for a quick shower and breakfast, went to get my hair done (it’s been 9 months since I last had it cut..oops!), ran my errands and was trying to get things done at home.  I’ve got laundry in now, just cleaned the bathroom (and nearly passed out because apparently I used too much cleaner) and am finally getting to blogging.  Who knew these past two days would be so busy?
Anyway, I’m sure any of you boys out there reading this entry will have about zero interest in today’s yesterday’s topic:  What’s in your makeup bag?
Can I just start out by saying I have an adorable makeup bag? :)  I mean, look at it...

The contents are rather simple:
-Foundation
-Sponge for foundation application
-Pressed Powder
-Blush
-Blush Brush
-Eyelash Curler
-Mascara
-Black and Cream Eyeliner (cream for highlighting)
-Tweezers
-Two small eyeshadows
I have some additional makeup in a separate box under the sink that consists generally of additional eyeshadows and eyeliners, extra mascara, nail polish, etc but this is what I use everyday and small enough to toss in another bag if I plan to shower and get ready at the gym before work.
That’s all for now! (Don’t worry the post for today is coming soon too!!)

A Photo of Your Favorite Place to Eat - Day 10

This topic is rather boring to me.  I do consider myself a bit of a foodie but I’m also super cheap and don’t allow myself to go out and eat that often because I’d rather save the money.  I’d have to say since moving to LA though, I do eat out more often especially since at my last job we went out for lunch everyday.  There were two places that were almost always on the top of my list for lunch - Bay Cities Italian Deli and Tacos Por Favor.
Apparently when I started working at GPS, they had recently been introduced to Tacos but it was quickly a weekly stop for lunch.  It’s a very hole-in-the-wall, what appears kind of sketchy place, but the food is delicious!  It’s very much a popular lunch spot and there’s often lines to the door during the lunch hours of people waiting to get their tacos and burritos.  I always ordered a veggie burrito, always!

Another favorite is Bay Cities Italian Deli.  When GPS moved offices, it was a lifesaver because we longer needed to sit in the Bay Cities traffic line just to get into the too small parking lot, but instead we could just walk.  It’s one of those places that you need to plan ahead that it’s going to be your lunch because it takes 45-60 mins for them to prepare your order due to high demand.  You place your order online and then drive to go pick it up.   There’s also a “walk-in” deli but why would you put yourself through that torture when you can just quickly make your order online and go in and pick it up?  That was another weekly habit and since leaving GPS, I haven’t had it! :(

Anyway, today is my day off and I’m trying to get motivated to do something.  I will be hitting the gym but since I couldn’t get out of bed until 9:30 and yesterday the gym was packed at 9:30 (why?!), I decided to start off with my breakfast and coffee first.  There’s a meeting at work tonight but other than that, it’s just a day to get errands and band work done.  I also have a to-do list of things to do around the apartment, but it’s not sounding particularly enticing.
Also, while I love snow and sometimes feel rather neutral about LA, with the crazy winter weather that has been going on back home in IL and out east in NY, I can’t tell you how happy I am to be here right now.  I’m sorry for all of my family and friends who are stuck inside or trying to dig themselves out of their homes, look on the bright side - you get a SNOW DAY! :)
I know a lot of people who have been moving lately and I’m getting a little jealous.  While I initially really liked my studio, I’m over it.  I’m over feeling like I have to tip-toe around management because their have been so many problems since I moved in, they’re sick of dealing with me (and honestly, I’m sick of dealing with them too).  I also feel like I’m having trouble finding the best flow for the space that I have.  I loved my studio in Boston and while my current space is larger, the layout isn’t working as well for me.  I think it’s also difficult to go back from having LARGE 1 bedroom apartments in NYC suburbs to a space for all of your stuff that is about 1/3 the size.  This place is quite a bit cheaper than the ones I had before, but when it comes time to move, I have some serious thinking and money crunching to do.  Until then, I really want to find ways to organize this space, but that also doesn’t make much sense to me when the organizational needs may change in about 2 months...

Oh well, that's enough from me for today.
